Initiated by the Künstlerhaus the project "Kunstplatz Karlsplatz" was founded in January 1997 for the coordination and cooperation of all the cultural institutions located in the vicinity of the Karlsplatz. At the same time the Vienna City Planning Office is working on the redesign of the traffic system in this area, according to public requests. The architectural competition for the redesign of the area surrounding the Künstlerhaus was also initiated by the Künstlerhaus and seems to be another important step for the house itself as well as for the entire Karlsplatz. The competition is taking advantage of the occasion of the reconstruction of the subway station next to the Künstlerhaus that is planned for 2000 and 2001. The winning project by the architects Christian Jabornegg and András Palffy includes the redesign of the ground level of the subway passage and access as well as a restructure and massive extension of the Künstlerhaus' lower levels.
