The Künstlerhaus Cinema is not only one of the last independent
"movie palaces", but due to its location within the Künstlerhaus
complex, a place of art. Its existence dates back to an initiative of
the artist association to create a screening platform for artistically
valuable films. With the support of Künstlerhaus member artists
the cinema opened in one of the redesigned exhibition halls of the main
building in 1949. It subsequently managed to establish itself as the
cinema for international avantgarde and experimental films in Austria,
by screening, among others, works by Cocteau, Tati and Clair. Today the
cinema is still run by the Künstlerhaus management. Apart from its
commercial program, including valuable international movies and
renowned film festivals, its "art specials",
such as sunday matinees, artists film retrospectives and
exhibition-related programs, serve as a communication plattform for
artists and movie goers. |
