"The design of Vienna's urban face after the turn of the century has been characterized to a high degree by Friedrich Ohmann. His works such as the Palmenhaus in the Burggarten, the design of Wienfluß particularly in the Stadtpark area, or the Empress Elisabeth Monument were characterized by the combination of architecture, sculpture, ornament and urban design. The fusion of late historism, baroque and modernism on the one hand and of stone, glass and iron - traditional and new material - on the other, resulted in a formal complexity that has produced one of the most beautiful works of Viennese architecture at the turn of the century.
In accordance with the current discussion about art in the public space and in remembrance of Friedrich Ohmann's works, the Künstlerhaus awards the Friedrich Ohmann Award for the design of "art in public space", as a result of the cooperation between several special disciplines.
The aim is to emphasize the necessity of artistic quality design of public space and the interdisciplinary cooperation of various specialized disciplines should be promoted." (Manfred Nehrer)
In the year 2002 the Künstlerhaus will present the Pfann Ohmann Award for "art
in public space" for the fourth time. The award is awarded every two years. Not
only members of the house may apply, but also artists or groups of artists from
all over Austria whose work definitively refers to interdisciplinary cooperation
on works and projects involving "art in public space".
