We look forward to welcoming you to our guided tour through the exhibition (K)EIN MENSCH IST EINE INSEL curated by Günther Oberhollenzer and co-curated by Larissa Agel.

One of our art educators will enable a closer look at the themes and will delve into some of the ideas behind the works of art, as well as explore the overall concept of the exhibition.

(K)EIN MENSCH IST EINE INSEL or (NO) ONE IS AN ISLAND is the first significant member exhibition since the 1990s. It illustrates the creative potential, as well as the diversity and plurality of the artists of the Künstlerhaus, Austrian Artists' Association.

How is it possible for an art exhibition to address an event as drastic as the coronavirus pandemic? How is it reflected in art; how do people react to it? Going beyond the political events of the day, the exhibition (NO) ONE IS AN ISLAND focuses on some of the fundamental issues of human coexistence that are being increasingly highlighted or renegotiated because of COVID-19: the relationships between society and the individual, social withdrawal and self-reflection, loneliness and isolation, veiling and masking… all issues that artists have reflected on and addressed in their work throughout the ages but which have, in these times of social and physical distancing, become more relevant than ever.

The exhibition tells of community and isolation in contemporary art, showing works of art that were in some cases created years ago, but the motifs and subjects of which are more topical than ever. It is surprising how strongly the impressions and experiences of the last year have conditioned our gaze; how these works of art earn new respect, experience a new interpretation. The exhibition also includes current works, created from the impressions of recent months.
